The aim of WESS 2017 is to document the intellectual influence of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) through its flagship publication, World Economic and Social Survey (WESS) on its 70th Anniversary. First published in 1948, the Survey is the oldest continuous post-World War II publication of its kind that records and analyses the performance of the global economy and social development trends as well as offers relevant policy recommendations. WESS 2017 will highlight how well the Survey tracked global economic and social conditions, and how its analysis influenced and were influenced by the prevailing discourse during the past seven decades. It will also critically reflect on its policy recommendations and their influence on actual policy-making and the shaping of the world economy. Particular attention will be given to reflect on the lessons that a historical review of the policy analysis done by the Survey would provide for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Statistical Yearbook is an annual compilation of a wide range of international economic, social and environmental statistics on over 200 countries and areas, compiled from sources including UN agencies and other international, national and specialized organizations. The 2017 edition contains data available to the Statistics Division as of 31 July 2017 and presents them in 33 tables on topics such as: communication; crime; development assistance; education; energy; environment; finance; gender; international merchandise trade; international tourism; labour force; national accounts; population and migration; price and production indices; and science and technology. Most tables covering the period up to 2017. Accompanying the tables are technical notes providing brief descriptions of major statistical concepts, definitions and classifications.

In 15 years, the lifespan of the 2030 Agenda, the 10-year-old girl will be 25. Will she still be left behind? Or will she be enjoying her human rights and well-being, and exploring the many avenues open to her, knowing that, when her own daughter turns 10, she will experience more of the same? Only the latter scenario will allow the world to truly claim that it transformed the course of development and met the challenge of the Sustainable Development Goals. Much depends on the choices we all make, from parents to policymakers, educators to health-care professionals, economists to entrepreneurs, journalists to community leaders. Today's 10-year-old girl is on the way to her future. And her future is our own.

The Asia-Pacific region is undergoing profound and rapid population changes. All countries in Asia and the Pacific are in the process of ageing at an unprecedented pace, although the timing and pace of this transition varies across the region. The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) is the global guiding document on population ageing, and with its round of third review and appraisal, this publication explores the progress made by countries in implementing MIPAA, addressing the challenges and issues faced by different countries.

Europe and Central Asia encompasses great economic, social and environmental diversity, its countries are facing various food security and nutrition challenges. While they have made significant progress in reducing the prevalence of undernourishment over the past two decades, new evidence shows a stagnation of this trend, particularly in Central Asia. The in-depth analysis provides new evidence for monitoring trends in food security and nutrition, and progress made against specific targets of the Sustainable Development Goal 2.

International migration is a structural feature of an interconnected Asia-Pacific. The number of migrants to and from the region continues to grow, reflecting factors such as changing demographics, economic transformations, and increased connectivity, as well as showing the influence of instability and conflict in the region; meanwhile, the impacts of migration in all countries have grown to become more important; and the means adopted by countries have adapted to try to address these impacts in a positive manner. This report draws from existing research and provides information on the key trends in migration in the region; the drivers of migration; the impacts of migration; and policy responses at national and multilateral level and concludes with recommendation

African countries have already started the hard work of implementing Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which were adopted in January 2015 and September 2015 respectively. Both agendas are complex in terms of numbers of goals, targets and indicators as well as dimensions of development covered; both are very ambitious and geared towards sustainable development through notably industrialization, eradication of poverty and inclusiveness. This progress report on Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2017) will provide a rigorous assessment of Africa's progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063 and serve as a basis for policy discussion, peer learning and advocacy.

At its first session, the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) requested the United Nations System to produce a report on the state of the world's indigenous peoples (SOWIP). The first edition covered all six thematic areas of the Forum's mandate (Economic and social development, Culture, Environment, Education, Health and Human rights. The second edition focused on Indigenous Peoples' Access to Health Services. This third edition of SOWIP provides a comprehensive overview of the current achievements and challenges facing indigenous peoples centred on the theme of education. The report is evidence-based, through seven chapters that will depict the situation in the seven socio-cultural regions determined to give broad representation of the world's indigenous peoples (Africa; Arctic; Asia; Central and South America and the Caribbean; Central and Eastern Europe, Russian Federation, Central Asia and Transcaucasia; North America; and the Pacific).

The 2015 Energy Balances contains energy balances for about 220 countries and territories, showing production, trade, transformation and consumption (by sector) in energy units for all energy products. The publications presents energy data for countries and areas in a format which shows the overall picture of the production, trade, transformation and consumption of energy products utilized in the region, published by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD). Such a format is useful in assessing and analysing supply and consumption patterns across both products and countries in detail on an internationally comparable basis.

The 2015 Electricity Profiles contains electricity profiles for about 230 countries and territories, providing detailed information on production, trade and consumption of electricity, net installed capacity and thermal power plant input and efficiency for most countries, on an internationally comparable basis. It is published by the United Nations Statistics Division with the aim of providing an overall picture of the electricity sector of such countries and areas. Electricity production and electric installed capacity are disaggregated by source, as coming from Combustible fuels, Hydro, Nuclear and Other sources; and by type of producer, whether from main activity producers or autoproducers

The blueprints of products we use every day are developed in close reference to international standards. When these designs are developed into manufactured goods, firms cooperate with competent bodies that check conformity of their merchandise with relevant norms. And finally, when products are on the market or are used as equipment at the workplace, specialized authorities monitor to protect consumers, workers and employees from hazard or non-compliant products.
